The Bolivian Diary

Ernesto Guevara de la Serna commonly known as Che Guevara, El Che or just Che was an Argentine born Marxist revolutionary, political figure, and leader of Cuban and internationalist guerrillas.

As a young man studying medicine, Guevara travelled roughrough throughout South America, bringing him into direct contact with the impoverished conditions in which many people lived. His experiences and observations during these trips led him to the conclusion that the region's socio-economic inequalities could only be remedied by socialism through revolution, prompting him to intensify his study of Marxism and travel to Guatemala to learn about the reforms being implemented there by President Jacobo Arbenz Guzmán.

While in Mexico in 1956, Guevara joined Fidel Castro's revolutionary 26th of July Movement, which seized power from the regime of the dictator General Fulgencio Batista in Cuba in 1959. In the months after the success of the revolution, Guevara was assigned the role of "supreme prosecutor", overseeing the public show trials and executions of hundreds of military and civilian leaders associated with the previous regime. After serving in various important posts in the new government and writing a number of articles and books on the theory and practice of guerrilla warfare, Guevara left Cuba in 1965 with the intention of fomenting revolutions first in Congo-Kinshasa, and then in Bolivia, where he was captured in a military operation supported by the CIA and the U.S. Army Special Forces. Guevara was summarily executed by the Bolivian Army in the town of La Higuera near Vallegrande on October 9, 1967.

After his death, Guevara became an icon of socialist revolutionary movements and a cultural icon worldwide. An Alberto Korda photo of him has received wide distribution and modification, appearing on t-shirts, protest banners, and in many other formats. The Maryland Institute College of Art called this picture "the most famous photograph in the world and a symbol of the 20th century.

The Bolivian Diary

Also removed when Guevara was captured was his diary, which documented events of the guerrilla campaign in Bolivia. The first entry is on November 7, 1966 shortly after his arrival at the farm in Ñancahuazú, and the last entry is on October 7, 1967, the day before his capture. The diary tells how the guerrillas were forced to begin operations prematurely due to discovery by the Bolivian Army, explains Guevara's decision to divide the column into two units that were subsequently unable to reestablish contact, and describes their overall failure. It records the rift between Guevara and the Bolivian Communist Party that resulted in Guevara having significantly fewer soldiers than originally anticipated. It shows that Guevara had a great deal of difficulty recruiting from the local populace, due in part to the fact that the guerrilla group had learned Quechua rather than the local language which was Tupí-Guaraní. As the campaign drew to an unexpected close, Guevara became increasingly ill. He suffered from ever-worsening bouts of asthma, and most of his last offensives were carried out in an attempt to obtain medicine.

The Bolivian Diary was quickly and crudely translated by Ramparts magazine and circulated around the world. There are at least four additional diaries in existence — those of Israel Reyes Zayas (Alias "Braulio"), Harry Villegas Tamayo ("Pombo"), Eliseo Reyes Rodriguez ("Rolando") and Dariel Alarcón Ramírez ("Benigno") each of which reveals additional aspects of the events in question.

HTTP cookies are used for authenticating, tracking and maintaining specific information about users.

The term "Cookie" is derived from "magic cookie" a well known concept in UNIX computing which inspired both the idea and the name of HTTP cookies.

What is the main purpose of Cookies?

Cookies are used by Web servers to differentiate users and to maintain data related to the user during navigation, possibly across multiple visits.

Cookies were introduced to provide a way for realizing a "shopping cart" a virtual device into which the user can "place" items to purchase, so that users can navigate a site where items are shown, adding or removing items from the shopping basket at any time.

Microsoft surface

What is Microsoft Surface?

Microsoft Surface, the first commercially available surface computer from Microsoft Corporation, turns an ordinary tabletop into a vibrant, interactive surface. It provides effortless interaction with digital content through natural gestures, touch and physical objects. Surface is a 30 inch display in a table like form factor that’s easy for individuals or small groups to interact with in a way that feels familiar, just like in the real world. In essence, it’s a surface that comes to life for exploring, learning, sharing, creating, buying and much more. Soon to be available in restaurants, hotels, retail and public entertainment venues, this experience will transform the way people shop, dine, entertain and live.

How does Surface works?

At a high level, Surface uses cameras to sense objects, hand gestures and touch. This user input is then processed and the result is displayed on the surface using rear projection.

What is Surface computing?

Surface computing is a new way of working with computers that moves beyond the traditional mouse and keyboard experience. It is a natural user interface that allows people to interact with digital content the same way they have interacted with everyday items such as photos, paint brushes and music their entire life with their hands, with gestures and by putting real world objects on the surface. Surface computing opens up a whole new category of products for users to interact with.

What are the key attributes of surface computing?

Surface computing has four key attributes:

Direct interaction. Users can actually “grab” digital information with their hands and interact with content by touch and gesture, without the use of a mouse or keyboard.

Multi-touch contact. Surface computing recognizes many points of contact simultaneously, not just from one finger, as with a typical touch screen, but up to dozens and dozens of items at once.

Multi-user experience. The horizontal form factor makes it easy for several people to gather around surface computers together, providing a collaborative, face-to-face computing experience.

Object recognition. Users can place physical objects on the surface to trigger different types of digital responses, including the transfer of digital content.

How does Surface benefit customers?

Microsoft Surface will break down the traditional barriers between people and technology, providing effortless interaction with digital content. Similar to the way ATMs changed how people got money from the bank, Microsoft is changing the way people will interact with all kinds of everyday content, including photos, music, a virtual concierge and games. Common, everyday tasks become entertaining, enjoyable and engaging, alone or face-to-face with family, friends or co-workers.

Gadgets

A gadget is a device or an appliance that has a useful specific practical purpose and function but is often thought of as a novelty. Gadgets are invariably considered to be more unusually or cleverly designed than normal technology at the time of their invention.

Gadgets are sometimes also referred to as gizmos. In some circles the distinction between a gadget and a gizmo is that a gizmo has moving parts, whereas a gadget need not have them. For example, a digital watch would be a gadget, while an analog watch would be a gizmo. Thus a gizmo is essentially a mechanical gadget.

Programmable gadgets

Most of the modern gadgets belong to this category. These gadgets are invariably based on a microprocessor and often have flash memory. They use embedded software which controls their functions. Such gadgets are found not only in the pockets of gadget freaks, but also in their cars and homes. Some examples of gadgets in this category are notebook computer, mobile phone, iPhone etc.

High Fliers 2007

It was a great moment of pride for all employees in the AHS (Application Hosting Services) competency last Sunday. The path to success started from Josh 2006 from where we achieved more than the objectives in service delivery. We got the best competency award in the TakeOff event 2007. This event took off in style in Eagleton resort Mysore Road.

We all started from EGL campus and really excited with our brand logos in black shirts. Three cheers to my company and Hats off to our manager who were behind our success. Even though we did not contribute much in this success but the moment of pride makes us to work hard to be a part of this award winners check list next year.

Hack Day

This is an event for the IBMers to show their innovativeness @ work.

FAQ's

What is Hack Day?

It's an opportunity to join your friends and colleagues to create new solutions and fix old problems. A chance to finally put that idea to good use. The right time to get a move on that project that's been on the back burner. It's your motivation, packaged as a day of freeform competition, to see what sort of creative ideas and fixes you can apply to your day to day life to improve or impress.

What?

It's a 1 day competition. You can enter it by submitting a "hack". A "hack" is something you did during that day to fix, improve, or simply be creative. Like a program you wrote, a mashup you created, a UI you designed, a ThinkPlace idea you submitted, a presentation you created, a screenshare demonstration you captured. Anything you like. Just do it and submit it.

Ok when it is?

Friday, October 26, 2007. For one day... give or take. We know people are from all over the world so everyone's "day" isn't in the same time frame. So it's a loose day. And we wont complain if you go over. After all, we know what it's like once you get hooked on doing something and don't want to stop. But keep it reasonable. We're much more interested that you participate than not, so if you're REALLY busy and have to put off your "one day" to the weekend, go ahead, we wont tell. Or even if you want to do it earlier in the week cause you're going on vacation, not a problem.

Captcha

A Captcha is a program that protects websites by generating and grading tests that humans can pass but computer programs cannot. For example while registering a new email id for yahoo a box with distorted text will be displayed which the humans can read but current computer programs can't.

The term Captcha ( Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart ). Some Captcha's now use pictures instead of words where the user is presented with a series of pictures and asked what is the common element among all of the pictures. By entering that common element, the user validates the transaction and the computer knows it is dealing with a human and not a bot.

Take Off '07

Flying colours all over in Koramangala Indoor Stadium, Bangalore on Saturday. Really a rocking day for all IBMers and got excited from the moment we entered inside the audi.

It was a moment of pride for the bluish guys and the pinkish girls rushing in. The excitement doubled when people saw a paper rocket placed on each and every seat in the stadium. We got back to our college days and it is really awesome to see rockets flying all over.

It’s a big moment to get inspired for a crowd of more than 3000. Peter Lorenzen started the show in style throwing a big rocket into crowd saying “Mine is bigger than yours”.

Navjot Singh Siddhu was the guest speaker for the eve really which I think is the best part of the day. Since I am bad in Hindi but some how managed to enjoy his jokes. Mind blowing talk with good sense of humor and made me curious to know more about him.

After his talk there was an award ceremony for the best employees, projects, managers, and competencies. And I am really proud to be a part of the best competency Application Hosting Services (AHS) led by Perumal M Kakkum even though we are not part of the success. I hope we do in the future.

Then started the next entertainment with Shaan created lot of expectations but doesn’t reach up to the level. But the Laser shows are damn good and got better with the music.

Popfly mashups

Yesterday I got an invite from the Microsoft Popfly team to test their mashups. For creating these mashups we need Microsoft Silverlight as a pre-requisite. Then there was a 5 step tutorial available to begin with. This is a mashup that gets pictures from the live image search website and animate them on a rotating sphere.

Step 1:

Find the Item labeled Live Image Search in the list on the left. These items are called blocks because you build your mashups with them.

Step 2:

Drag the Live Image Search block into the middle of the screen. This area is called design surface because it’s where you design stuff you make. Click on the wrench beside the block to zoom in. Change the query to whatever you want cats, monster trucks. Click on the wrench to get back to the design surface.

Step 3:

Find an item named PhotoSphere and drag it into the middle of the screen.

Step 4:

Click once on the Live Image Search block and then once on the PhotoSphere block. This will connect them and make a mashup.

Step 5:

Click on the preview link at the top of the design surface to play with your mashup.

Live Image Search is a control responsible to get the images we have queried, PhotoSphere is a control to display these images in a sphere and the functionalities of these 2 websites are combined to form a mashup.

Really exciting right? If you guys want to test this integrating more than 100’s of web applications Just give a comment to this post along with your mail ID.

This website gave me lot of valuable tips for my carrier.

' Mashups ' sew data together

I am still wondering how this mashups work in a real time scenario. But this article has cleared my doubt till some extent.

As Hurricane Catrina approached the Gulf in August 2005, storm trackers at Shumacher group, Lafayette a company that manages physicians for emergency rooms consulted a vareity of information resources like weather reports, a map studded with pins representing homes of nearby doctors and a computerised phone book to make sure hospitals would be fully staffed.

Almost one month later by the time hurricane hit, the storm trackers had new software that let them see weather conditions along with locations and contact information of the area physicians overlaid on a map all on one screen.

The hurricane software took less than two days for a developer to build, thanks to a new technology called "mashups". More and more companies are adopting the same technology. Mashups essentially are a way to take data trapped in seperate software applications and combine them into new hybrid applications. Mashups however are easy to build and cheap.

IBM and Microsoft among others recently released easy to use mashup building tools. IBM in February launched QEDWiki which provides developers with a portal where they can choose which application to include in a mashup and define how they want this applications to work together.

Microsft's mashup tool Popfly work with its Sharepoint collabaration software. Google has let developers make mashups with its popular mapping software since 2005.

Whistler Tricks

Whistler is the code name for Windows XP, Longhorn for Windows vista , the code name for the next Microsoft's OS is Blackcomb and so on. These code names are given by Steve Balmer CEO of Microsoft. Let me give some tricks for blocking any websites without actually using any third party software. I got this trick from a guy named ahmad who has posted his blog's link in CNUGSTUDENT.NET. I found this interesting and want to share with all.

Open the file "Hosts" or "LMHosts" from C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\Etc. Then add the following line at the end of the file 127.0.0.1 http://www.xyz.com/ which means when someone tries to visit http://www.xyz.com/ from your website it gets blocked because the site is redirected to 127.0.0.1 which is the IP of your own computer. To know the IP of any website just go to DOS and type " ping http://www.xyz.com/ ".

This is the theory involved in this: Hosts is a file used by Microsoft TSP/IP protocol for Windows. It acts as TCP/IP host table and contains list of address to name solution mappings of numeric IP addresses resolved to corresponding host names. It actually acts a local DNS server by translating a domain name into an IP address thus decreasing the time need to reach a remote server.

To properly use HOSTS you must make sure ENABLE DSN is turned on : Control Panel --> Network --> Your TCP/IP adapter name --> TCP/IP Properties --> DNS Configuration tab --> Check enable DNS box --> Apply OK

The following is the order in which Windows tries resolving hostnames only if all fails do you get the error Page Not Found

1.HOSTS file
2.DNS server
3.NetBIOS cache
4.WINS server
5.Broadcast
6.LMHOSTS file

P.S : Try this in your friends computer when he is not in the seat ;-) just open the Hosts file and type the URL which he frequently use and the IP of some other URL So that when he clicks the URL the browser redirects him to some other page.

A pinch of C code and A cup of coffee

Last week I got a mail from one of my friend Radha Krishna who is working in Satyam. He needs some code which prints the following output.

1
2 2
3 3 3

He was asking the code in NATURAL language which no one knows. I found a P.S in his mail saying that "If u cud give me the C code for this logic I can write the equivalent NATURAL language". I have C in my system here , when I started coding I thought this is really a difficult logic to execute. Then I spent nearly 20 minutes with pen and paper with different combinations of FOR loops and successsfuly got the required sequence.

scanf("%d",&n);
k=n-1;
for(i=1;i<=n;i++)
{
for(j=1;j<=k;j++)
{
printf(" ");
}
k--;
for(j=1;j<=i;j++)
{
printf("%d ",i);
}
printf("\n");
}

Life is Beautiful

I got this DVD when i was travelling in train from Chennai to Bangalore. The name of this movie is really catchy and I read the story in Vikatan (Classic Movies weekly subscription). Life Is Beautiful is a 1997 Italian language film which tells the story of a Jewish Italian Guido Orefice, who lives in his own romantic fairy tale world, but must learn how to use his fertile imagination to help his son survive their internment in a Nazi concentration camp.

Catfish and Mandala

My father gave this book to me long before. But still I am not able to read this book completely. because the vocabulary used by the author is very difficult to understand.

This book is written by Andhrew X Pham. Catfish and Mandala is a raw memoir of the authors quest to understand his identity as a transplanted Vietnamese in the American society as well as his identity as a Vietnamese American in his native Vietnam. The story hinges on Pham's attempt to bicycle his way from California, around the Pacific Rim, through Japan and finally through his homeland covering the stretch of the American-built Highway 1 from Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) to Hanoi.

Catfish and Mandala jumps between Pham’s narrative of his journey, his escape from Vietnam upon the fall of Saigon (now HCMC) and his childhood in the United States. The book is interspersed with details of his family’s struggle against racism and language barriers.
